Southern California faces high fire risk from Santa Ana winds

Santa Ana winds are bringing elevated wildfire danger and unseasonably warm temperatures to Southern California. The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, specifically covering the Santa Clarita Valley, the Santa Susana Mountains, the western and eastern Santa Monica Mountains, and the western San Gabriel Mountains.

Forecasts indicate wind gusts between 30 and 45 mph, with isolated gusts potentially reaching 55 mph in mountainous areas. Low humidity levels, ranging from 8 to 20 percent, combined with dry vegetation, create conditions favorable for rapid fire growth and extreme fire behavior.

In response to the risk, Southern California Edison is considering power shutoffs for approximately 4,639 customers in Los Angeles County and 297 in Ventura County to prevent utility-related ignitions. Local officials, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department, have increased staffing and pre-positioned aerial and ground resources. Residents have been urged to review evacuation plans and prepare for potential utility-initiated outages.
