Santa Barbara County confirms first measles case since 2019

The Santa Barbara County Health Department has confirmed the first positive case of measles in the jurisdiction since 2019. The isolated case is linked to recent international travel.

Health officials are currently investigating potential exposures to mitigate local transmission. Measles is a highly contagious airborne virus that can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left a room. Symptoms typically emerge seven to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes, followed by a characteristic rash.

Authorities are urging residents to review their vaccination records to ensure they are up to date with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Those who are not fully vaccinated, particularly young children, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, are at the highest risk of infection and severe complications.
