Santa Barbara County issues storm advisories and sandbag distribution

Santa Barbara County officials have issued advisories following forecasted rainfall expected to continue through Thursday, October 22, 2026. Environmental Health Services has warned residents of health risks at countywide beaches due to storm water runoff, which may carry bacteria, pesticides, and pollutants. Officials recommend avoiding swimming, playing, or surfing in the ocean and creeks during and for at least three days following rain events to prevent illnesses such as rashes, fever, and gastrointestinal issues.

Additionally, the City of Santa Barbara has activated self-serve sandbag stations at the City Annex Yard and City Fire Station 7 to assist with potential flooding in low-lying areas, streets, and near creeks. Residents are advised to prepare for thunderstorms and minor debris flows, particularly in recent burn areas. Recreational harvesters are cautioned to wait at least 10 days after significant rain before harvesting shellfish due to potential contamination.
