Santa Barbara holds first Pride flag raising ceremony

Santa Barbara held its first-ever Pride flag raising ceremony at De La Guerra Plaza on Monday, marking the beginning of the city’s Pride Week. The event brought together city leaders, LGBTQ+ advocates, and community members to celebrate inclusion and visibility.

Organizers collaborated with several groups, including the Pacific Pride Foundation, PFLAG Santa Barbara, and the Santa Barbara Transgender Advocacy Network. City Administrator Kelly McAdoo described the moment as an honor that reflects years of advocacy and commitment to making the city a safe place for everyone. Julio Roman, executive director of the Pacific Pride Foundation, noted that this year’s theme, ‘Out, Proud and Unstoppable,’ emphasizes the importance of creating communities where individuals can be themselves.

Local leaders and residents emphasized that the flag serves as a symbol of safety and belonging, particularly for transgender individuals and youth. The ceremony kicks off a week of celebrations, including the upcoming Pacific Pride Festival.
