Santa Barbara principal returns after rigging student election
Arielle Curry, the principal of Washington Elementary in Santa Barbara, has returned to her position following a period of administrative leave. The leave was triggered by a scandal in which Curry admitted to overriding student election results to ensure her own child won a leadership position despite not receiving the most votes.
Curry acknowledged that the selection process lacked fairness and transparency, specifically noting that she led deliberations that changed the outcome of two positions, including the 6th-grade presidency. In a letter to families, she apologized for her actions and pledged to implement changes to the election process to ensure objectivity.
The Santa Barbara Unified School District has announced that the original election results have been reinstated and the student council cabinet has been extended to include the rightful winners. While Curry has returned to campus, the incident has caused significant concern among parents and students regarding the lessons being taught to the student body.
