Santa Barbara principal rigged student election for daughter

Arielle Curry, the principal of Washington Elementary School in Santa Barbara, California, has admitted to manipulating student government election results. Curry acknowledged overriding the tallied votes for two positions, which resulted in runners-up being awarded seats instead of the students chosen by their peers. One of these positions, sixth-grade president, was awarded to Curry’s own daughter, who had finished in second place.

Following the discovery of the scheme, Curry was placed on administrative leave on September 28. She returned to her position on October 10 after issuing a formal apology to families, teachers, and students. In a letter to the school community, Curry admitted that the election process “lacks transparency and fairness” and pledged to overhaul the system to ensure future integrity.

The incident has caused significant tension within the school community. Reports from parents and staff describe a campus divided by the controversy, noting instances of emotional confrontations, harsh exchanges, and deep divisions among students and faculty.
