Santa Barbara regional sports update: SBCC wins and local honors

Various athletic teams in the Santa Barbara region achieved notable results across recent competitions.

The Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) women’s water polo team secured a sweep at the Mt. SAC Invite, finishing with a 13-2 record. Highlights included an 11-10 victory over No. 1 Long Beach and dominant wins against San Joaquin Delta, Santa Monica, and American River.

In women’s soccer, Sacramento State fell 3-2 to UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference match. Despite a late push by the Hornets, a defensive clearance by the Gauchos in the final moments prevented an equalizer.

At the high school level, Santa Barbara High School athletes Paolo Borgioli (water polo) and Elina Stump (flag football) were named Athletes of the Week. Borgioli scored 24 goals during a tournament, while Stump recorded significant offensive and defensive statistics in two shutouts.

Additionally, the SBCC women’s golf team placed eighth at the 3C2A State Preview in Pacific Grove, led by Aidie Smith’s individual 15th-place finish.
