Santa Barbara Unified joins lawsuit against social media giants

The Santa Barbara Unified School District has joined a national lawsuit involving more than 1,500 school districts against major social media companies, including Meta, Alphabet, TikTok, and Snapchat. The legal action, filed in Federal District Court in San Francisco by the Frantz Law Group, alleges that these platforms are “knowingly causing emotional harm to children” by intentionally designing addictive systems and marketing them to minors.

District officials state that excessive social media use is contributing to a youth mental health crisis, manifesting in students as anxiety, depression, disordered eating, sleep deprivation, and thoughts of self-harm. The lawsuit claims these platforms facilitate cyberbullying and unhealthy social comparison.

Local educators noted significant impacts within classrooms, including declines in academic performance and attendance. At La Cumbre Junior High, school officials reported that mental health referrals related to suicidal ideation have increased from a few per year to several per week over the last decade, with counselors estimating that 70 to 80 percent of such reports are linked to social media use.
