Santa Barbara Unified reports literacy gains and leadership changes

The Santa Barbara Unified School District has reported an increase in literacy proficiency following the pilot of a universal literacy screener for its youngest students. Data shows that students reading at or above grade level increased by 23% in kindergarten, 26% in first grade, and 12% in second grade across nine elementary schools.

The district utilizes the mCLASS platform to assess comprehension, fluency, and accuracy multiple times a year. Following the successful pilot in grades K-2, the district is expanding the screening process to include grades three through six this year.

In addition to literacy advancements, several schools within the district are entering the new academic year with new leadership. Santa Barbara Junior High, Santa Barbara Community Academy, and Harding University Partnership School have all welcomed new principals, some transitioning from other districts and others from within the Santa Barbara Unified system.
