Santa Barbara Unified students protest YouTube and tech bans
Students in the Santa Barbara Unified School District are protesting new technology restrictions, including a ban on YouTube and other Google platforms like Google Translate and Google Earth on district-issued iPads. The “Tech with Intent” policies were implemented in June following pressure from parents concerned about mental health, social media addiction, and the impact of heavy device use on critical thinking and academic performance.
Student leader Mateo Gallegos, representing San Marcos High School, coordinated a survey of more than 1,700 students across three high schools to assess the impact of these policies. The survey results indicated significant discontent: 85 percent of respondents stated the YouTube ban negatively impacts their ability to study and complete assignments, while 73 percent described accessing online educational materials as “difficult.” Additionally, 83 percent of students reported being poorly informed about the new regulations.
The debate reached a flashpoint at a recent board meeting where students expressed their concerns. The tension also extended to student leadership, as Gallegos reported being called to a private meeting with Superintendent Hilda Maldonado and Board President Bill Banning regarding his role as a student board representative following his activism.
