Santa Bárbara mining accidents claim five lives in one week

A series of mining accidents in the municipality of Santa Bárbara, Chihuahua, has resulted in the deaths of five miners within a single week.

The most recent tragedy occurred during the early hours of Sunday between 1:00 and 2:00 AM, when a collapse at the ‘La Flauta’ mine shaft in the Clarines sector trapped four workers. The victims have been identified as José Ángel Vargas Becerril, Jesús Emanuel Burciaga Bonilla, Irving Pargas Güereca, and José Dionicio García Ponce.

Coinciding with the timing of the collapse, the National Seismological Service reported a 3.4 magnitude earthquake a few kilometers from the municipal seat. While local residents and public safety officials reported feeling the tremor, authorities have not yet confirmed a direct causal link between the seismic activity and the mine collapse. Technical experts are expected to review the seismic data as part of the investigation.

This incident follows another fatal accident in the same locality on September 10, where a miner had been missing since September 4. These consecutive events highlight the significant risks faced by ‘gambusinos’ (informal miners) in the region due to potential cave-ins and shaft collapses.
