Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Abrantes opens new elderly residences

Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Abrantes has inaugurated new assisted living residences in Abrantes, Portugal, designed to support 32 elderly residents while preserving their autonomy. The facility includes 16 apartments, medical and nursing offices, a pharmacy, and communal dining and social areas.

The project involved an investment of approximately three million euros, funded through the institution's own resources and bank loans without public subsidies. The project, which began in 2019, faced significant delays and cost increases—rising from an initial estimate of 1.2 million euros—due to bureaucratic hurdles, pandemic effects, and rising construction costs.

João Pombo, the institution's provider, noted that the period of construction was difficult and that the lack of revenue during the delay period aggravated financial difficulties. The institution expects the new residences to generate revenue to help offset annual deficits in its other social services. Pombo also called on the government for more robust financing mechanisms and greater predictability in public subsidies for social solidarity institutions.
