Santa Catalina de Siena School destroyed by fire in Concepción

A fire destroyed the former Santa Catalina de Siena School in the Aurora de Chile sector of Concepción, Chile. The facility, which served as a significant educational and social pillar since the 1950s, had ceased operations in 2024 due to declining enrollment and is currently under private ownership.

Emergency responders, including 17 fire engines from the Concepción Fire Department, were deployed to the scene. Authorities confirmed that the fire originated in adjacent brush and trash within a nearby informal settlement or makeshift camp. While the flames spread to the school buildings, officials reported no injuries, arrests, or immediate risk of the fire spreading to neighboring residential homes.

Local residents expressed deep nostalgia and concern, noting that similar fires have occurred in the area previously. Community leaders and neighbors suggested that the lack of maintenance on the private property and the presence of individuals living in nearby makeshift structures contributed to the incident. The Mayor of Concepción, Héctor Muñoz, has called on the property owners to take responsibility for the maintenance of the site.
