Santa Catarina cities confront job market shortages

The city of Jaraguá do Sul in Santa Catarina has published a list of ten public‑service examinations slated for 2025, covering roles such as school administrators, pedagogical coordinators, research agents, and legislative analysts. These contests aim to attract candidates seeking stable, well‑paid positions in the public sector.

Meanwhile, Joinville, the state’s largest economy, reported the creation of 6,617 formal jobs in the first quarter of 2026, the highest net hiring balance in Santa Catarina. Despite the apparent boom, the city faces a severe labor shortage: the state unemployment rate of 2.7% is far below Brazil’s estimated natural rate of around 8%, indicating insufficient available workers. Industry leaders say the surplus of vacancies is forcing firms to recruit from other states, highlighting a mismatch between job growth and workforce supply.
