Santa Catarina on alert for severe storms and cyclone

An extratropical cyclone originating from a low-pressure system has placed Santa Catarina, Brazil, under alert for severe weather on Friday, September 11, 2026. The system, located along the coast between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, is driving a cold front across the state.

Forecasts indicate the possibility of intense rain, lightning, hail, and wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h. The Civil Defense has issued specific warnings for 21 municipalities in the West region, including Anchieta, Bom Jesus do Oeste, Campo Erê, and others. High risks are noted for roof damage, electrical grid disruptions, and falling trees, with moderate to high risks of flooding and flash floods.

Alerts primarily cover the Great West, Itajaí Valley, North Plateau, and North Coast. Temperatures are expected to range from lows of 10°C in mountainous areas to highs of 27°C in the North Plateau and West regions.
