Santa Catarina strengthens environmental oversight and fish protection
In Santa Catarina, Brazil, the Institute of the Environment (IMA) and the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) have signed a technical cooperation agreement to improve the integration and monitoring of environmental licensing processes. The agreement grants the MPF access to the SINFAT and GAIA systems, allowing for direct oversight of licensing and environmental infraction management to increase transparency and administrative efficiency.
Simultaneously, the Santa Catarina Military Police have launched ‘Operação Piracema’ in the Uruguay River Basin. This annual operation, which runs from October 1 until January 31, 2027, aims to protect native fish species during their reproductive migration period. The operation includes land and water patrols, as well as drone surveillance, to enforce fishing restrictions and promote conservation efforts in the western and central regions of the state.
