Santa Clara County gardening tips for October
The UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County have released October gardening advice, highlighting the current persimmon season. Fuyu persimmons are noted to be ripe when their skin turns orange.
Regarding the use of coffee grounds in landscaping, research from Washington State University indicates that spent grounds have a nearly neutral pH and do not significantly acidify soil. While they contain nitrogen, they require composting before the nutrients become available to plants.
Furthermore, there is no scientific evidence that coffee grounds deter garden pests. Gardeners are advised to use them as a thin layer of mulch covered by a thicker layer to prevent compaction, but should avoid using them in areas where seeds are sprouting, as they may reduce germination or stunt young plant growth.
