Santa Clara de Uchunya community sues to recover ancestral lands
The Santa Clara de Uchunya native community, belonging to the Shipibo-Konibo people, has initiated legal action to recover ancestral lands in the Nueva Requena district, Coronel Portillo province. The community filed a claim for restitution before the Campo Verde Civil Court against seven individuals accused of illegal occupation.
According to community leader Wilson Barbarán, the disputed area is part of their titled ancestral property. The community reports that the illegal occupants have engaged in deforestation, logging, and burning, while also installing rustic housing, portable sawmills, and crops on the land. The lawsuit seeks the removal of all constructions and plantations at the occupants' expense, as well as the payment of legal costs.
