Santa Cruz de La Palma introduces 'El Enano' symbol to traffic lights

The city of Santa Cruz de La Palma has introduced a new visual element to its traffic signals by replacing the traditional pedestrian silhouette with 'El Enano', a prominent symbol of the Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves festivities.

Mayor Asier Antona confirmed the initiative was launched by the City Council to honor a beloved local figure and integrate cultural identity into urban infrastructure. The figure utilizes standard traffic colors, with green indicating it is safe to cross and red indicating pedestrians should wait.

While the change has sparked debate on social media, with some residents questioning municipal priorities, Antona noted that similar cultural adaptations to traffic signals exist in other parts of the world. He also stated that the project is part of a broader effort to repair and replace aging traffic light systems to ensure pedestrian safety.
