Santa Cruz de Tenerife implements pest control in Plaza del Príncipe
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has launched an intensive pest control campaign in Plaza del Príncipe following the detection of black rats (Rattus rattus) near the central kiosk. To contain the situation, authorities have implemented perimeter fencing, intensive cleaning, and the removal of deteriorated wooden decking and vegetation.
The kiosk, which has been closed for several months awaiting a new contract, is believed to be the source of the infestation due to structural gaps, basement access, and decaying materials that provide shelter for the rodents. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that municipal protocols were activated immediately to prevent the issue from spreading throughout the capital.
The intervention is being carried out by the Department of Public Services in coordination with the specialized company Rentokil Initial. Local officials noted that while this is a specific response to the Plaza del Príncipe incident, the city maintains continuous preventive pest control services across all neighborhoods.
