Santa Cruz de Tenerife initiates neighborhood cleaning campaign and seeks state approval for Benijo beach restoration

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council announced an extraordinary neighborhood cleaning operation to run from Tuesday, 28 July to Thursday, 30 July 2026. The three‑day shock‑cleaning will focus on the El Draguillo and El Rosarito districts, deploying about 30 municipal workers and 12 high‑capacity vehicles for intensive weeding, deep sweeping, pressure‑water washing and sanitation of critical street points. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted the initiative as a reinforcement of daily maintenance to improve residents’ quality of life, while Deputy Mayor Carlos Tarife stressed the need for continued civic cooperation.

In a related municipal action, the council approved a motion – 21 votes in favour, two against – urging the Spanish State to unblock the rehabilitation of Benijo beach in Anaga. The motion, passed under urgency procedures, references an already funded project worth €2.2 million that aims to stabilize the beach’s slope, address recurring landslides and improve accessibility. The council noted a recent contradictory report from the national Directorate of Coasts and called on the State to allow the work to proceed without further delay.
