Santa Cruz de Tenerife official proposes Sunday opening for large retailers

Carmen Pérez, the Commerce, Tourism, and Employment Councilor for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, has proposed adopting a commercial model similar to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to allow large retail surfaces to open on Sundays.

The proposal suggests that large stores could operate every Sunday from October to April to coincide with the peak cruise ship season. This would involve modifying the current Tourist High-Flow Zone (ZGAT) or creating a second zone to allow for expanded Sunday activity.

Pérez noted that while the current ZGAT allows all establishments in the historic center to open on Sundays, most do not. Currently, in the rest of the municipality, only businesses with a surface area of less than 300 square meters are permitted to open on Sundays.
