Bolivian transport sectors threaten strike over diesel subsidy removal

Transport sectors in Bolivia, particularly in Santa Cruz, have issued an ultimatum to the government following the implementation of Decreto Supremo 5716, which eliminates diesel subsidies. The decree has raised diesel prices significantly, leading to concerns over increased operational costs and rising prices for basic consumer goods.

In Santa Cruz, transport leaders have announced a 48-hour strike and mobilization starting October 5 if the decree is not repealed. Local authorities, including Mayor Manuel Saavedra, have criticized the strikes as an “abuse” against the population and are proposing stricter sanctions for unjustified service suspensions. Saavedra has indicated he will meet with President Rodrigo Paz to discuss energy matrix alternatives.

Negotiations between the government and the Confederación de Choferes de Bolivia have entered a recess period. While ministers from Economy, Hydrocarbons, and Public Works have participated in discussions, no final agreement has been reached regarding the diesel subsidy, the Fongat credits, or other sector demands such as tax adjustments and insurance reforms.
