Latin American mining leaders prioritize critical minerals for energy transition

Mining authorities and regional leaders across the Americas are prioritizing critical minerals to meet the global demand driven by the energy transition. At the XVI Conference of Mining Ministers of the Americas (CAMMA), officials emphasized the need for increased coordination, technical cooperation, and the development of local production chains to add value to mineral resources.

In Argentina, provincial governors from Mendoza, San Juan, Jujuy, and Santa Cruz are actively seeking foreign investment. During the US-Argentina Critical Minerals Forum, leaders highlighted their provinces' legal security and geological potential, particularly regarding copper. Santa Cruz, through its state company Fomicruz, is also seeking strategic partners to develop precious metal projects in the Deseado Massif.

In Chile, the focus remains on mid-sized mining companies. While these firms possess significant technical expertise and human capital, they face challenges regarding environmental permitting processes and access to international financing to scale operations and meet the rising demand for copper.
