Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere has announced the Santa Cruz Mobility Plan, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and transit in one of Brazil’s most populous neighborhoods. The project involves over 70 kilometers of interventions and an initial estimated investment of R$ 443 million.

The plan includes reorganizing intersections, creating new road connections, and enhancing access for vehicles, pedestrians, and the BRT system. Key projects include the construction of two new viaducts over the railway line to connect Rua Felipe Cardoso to Estrada da Boa Esperança, and the implementation of a new turnaround on Avenida Cesário de Melo to alleviate congestion near the Curral Falso Terminal.

Additional measures involve creating new links between Estrada da Pedra and Avenida Cesário de Melo, which will feature bike lanes and urban improvements. The initiative also targets improvements around the Santa Veridiana BRT station and the Estrada de Sepetiba. The project follows a similar model previously implemented in the Campo Grande neighborhood.
