Santa Cruz musical identity highlighted through folk traditions

The musical identity of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, is highlighted through the history of the taquirari song ‘Viva Santa Cruz’ and new musical tributes to the region.

Composed by Oruro-born musician Gilberto Rojas Enríquez, ‘Viva Santa Cruz’ has evolved from a lesser-known piece into a symbol of regional identity and resistance. Its history is closely tied to the early days of broadcasting in Santa Cruz, specifically involving Radio Electra during the political tensions of the 1950s. The song saw early recordings by the duo Las Kantutas and public performances by the conjunto Típico Sajama in 1954 before becoming a cultural staple.

In a contemporary tribute, the musical character Camba Enamorau, portrayed by composer Hermes Montaño, has released ‘Pa voj Santa Cruz’. This new taquirari song and accompanying music video celebrate the traditions and landscapes of Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Montero, serving as a musical gift for the department's anniversary month.
