Santa Cruz political parties criticize lack of public maintenance
Political parties in Santa Cruz, Madeira, are criticizing local authorities over the lack of maintenance and conservation of public spaces and heritage sites.
Manuela Gonçalves of the CHEGA party has raised concerns regarding the degradation of public areas, specifically citing the Miradouro do Lombinho. She noted issues with cleanliness, uncontrolled vegetation, and dilapidated structures, particularly in areas outside the town center. Gonçalves also highlighted resident concerns regarding rat infestations linked to poor sanitation.
Simultaneously, the PPM Madeira party has criticized the Santa Cruz Municipal Council and the Regional Government for a perceived lack of coordination regarding the Cristo Rei do Garajau monument. The party claims a dispute over responsibility between the two entities has left the historic 14-meter sculpture in a state of deterioration, resulting in its closure to visitors. PPM Madeira has called for a clear determination of jurisdiction to ensure the monument's preservation.
