Santa Elena tourism surges during August 10 holiday weekend

The August 10 holiday weekend drove significant tourism to the Santa Elena province in Ecuador, with an overall hotel occupancy rate reaching approximately 80%. The coastal destinations of Salinas and Ayangue saw the highest influx of visitors, largely driven by the humpback whale watching season.

According to the Ecuador Transit Commission (CTE), 62,799 vehicles entered the peninsula during the three-day holiday. This high volume of travelers caused intermittent traffic congestion on major routes, specifically between Ballenita and La Libertad, as well as on the roads leading to Salinas, Montañita, and Olón.

The increased activity provided an economic boost to local businesses, including restaurants, artisans, and tourism service providers. Local seafood, particularly ceviche, was among the most requested items by visitors.
