Santa Fe inaugurates new $80M high-tech prison in Recreo
Governor Maximiliano Pullaro inaugurated the Unidad Penitenciaria N° 9 in Recreo, Santa Fe, a new prison facility designed to alleviate overcrowding in local police stations. The project involved an investment of approximately $80 million, with $25 million specifically allocated to advanced security technology, including facial recognition, artificial intelligence monitoring, and voice identification for telephone calls.
The facility has an initial capacity for 891 inmates, including dedicated sections for women, though its infrastructure can accommodate up to 1,200 people. A massive transfer operation has already begun to move detainees from various police stations to the new complex.
During the inauguration, Pullaro criticized previous security approaches, labeling them as “garantismo bobo” (foolish legalism) and asserting that the state must take a firmer stance against criminal organizations. Government spokespeople also used the event to contrast the current administration's proactive infrastructure investments with the perceived inaction of previous provincial governments.
