Santa Fe livestock relocated to avoid Paraná River flooding
Producers in the Santa Fe province of Argentina have moved more than 500,000 animals from island areas to higher ground to prevent losses due to rising water levels in the Paraná River basin. This preventive measure comes in response to the El Niño phenomenon, which has increased river flow following heavy rains and the opening of floodgates at the Yacyretá and Itaipú hydroelectric dams.
According to data from the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa), the number of exposed animals has been reduced by over 70% since early August. While approximately 709,300 animals were at risk at the start of the month, current figures show only 181,798 cattle and 8,908 working horses remain in the vulnerable island sectors. Much of the relocation has occurred within the Garay and San Javier departments, with some livestock being moved to other provinces to ensure safety.
