Argentina prepares for Pope Leo XIV visit with bank closures and airport protests

Argentina is implementing significant logistical and economic measures ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s visit, scheduled to begin on November 8. To accommodate the papal tour, banks nationwide will be closed for five consecutive days, from Friday, November 6, to Tuesday, November 10. This closure includes the Bank Workers' Day, a weekend, a national holiday on November 9 established by Decree 1103/2026, and a banking holiday on November 10 mandated by the Central Bank.

In the aviation sector, the Association of State Workers (ATE) has announced a work stoppage for Friday, November 6, across 27 airports. The union claims the government has defunded the aerocommercial system, potentially causing delays and cancellations. ATE stated that only sanitary, humanitarian, organ transplant, and official flights will be guaranteed during the protest.

Security and transport preparations are also underway. In Córdoba, police will conduct exhaustive vehicle inspections at 14 main entrances to ensure safety and order. In Luján, authorities are organizing a large-scale operation involving increased train frequencies and designated parking areas to manage the expected crowds at the Basilica. The Archdiocese of Buenos Aires has also announced that churches will ring their bells for ten minutes to welcome the Pope.
