Santa Inês bee swarm attack kills birds and injures man

A bee swarm attack in the Santo Antônio neighborhood of Santa Inês, Maranhão, resulted in the deaths of approximately ten birds, including chickens and ducks. The incident began when a resident disturbed a swarm while cleaning a yard and pulling a branch from a tamarind tree.

One man was injured by stings during the attack and was transported to a hospital, where he later received medical discharge. The bees spread across at least three neighboring yards, prompting residents to seek shelter inside their homes.

The Maranhão Military Fire Department (CBMMA) responded to the scene, isolating the area and removing three beehives. Firefighters captured the queen bees in apiculture boxes and used smoke to guide the rest of the swarm into containers. Authorities have advised residents not to attempt to remove hives themselves and to contact professionals to avoid severe allergic reactions.
