Santa Margarida hosts European military technology testing campaign
The Santa Margarida Military Field in Constância, Portugal, is hosting a major European military technology testing campaign. The initiative integrates the Portuguese Army’s ARTEX26 exercise with an operational experimentation campaign from the European Defence Agency (EDA), marking the first time such an event has been held in Portugal.
More than 70 entities representing 22 nationalities are participating in the preparatory phase. The campaign aims to test approximately 110 technological solutions in areas such as unmanned aerial and ground systems, electronic warfare, loitering munitions, drone combat, and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense. The testing will progress from individual solution assessments to integration within tactical military scenarios, including infantry support and night operations.
A key component of the event is the Sentinel Strike Challenge, an EDA competition focused on testing loitering munitions and aerial attack systems. Five companies from Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Greece are participating in this challenge. The broader ARTEX26 exercise is scheduled to run through mid-October, seeking to accelerate the transition of emerging technologies into operational military capabilities.
