Santa Margherita della Fratta Hospital to maintain surgical services

The Azienda USL Toscana Sud Est has clarified that surgical activities at the Santa Margherita della Fratta Hospital in Cortona will not be suspended. Addressing rumors of a shutdown, the agency stated that no decision has been made to cease surgical operations.

Instead, the facility is undergoing a reorganization to manage a temporary shortage of medical personnel. This strategy involves restructuring the regional surgical network, including the involvement of surgeons from the San Donato Hospital in Arezzo to ensure specialized expertise remains available.

Regional Councilor for Health and Welfare, Monia Monni, noted that the difficulty in recruiting specialist doctors is a widespread national issue, particularly affecting peripheral hospitals. She emphasized that the current situation is a response to objective staffing shortages rather than a planned reduction of the hospital's services.
