Santa Maria della Scala in Siena advances redevelopment and cultural programming
The Santa Maria della Scala museum complex in Siena is undergoing significant cultural and structural transitions. A recent exhibition focused on the complex's strategic masterplan has concluded, highlighting proposals from three international architecture firms to revitalize approximately 18,000 square meters of currently underutilized space. This redevelopment aims to bridge the site's history as an ancient hospital with new urban and cultural functions. The Ministry of Culture is expected to finalize a contribution of over one million euros to support these efforts.
In conjunction with the Archivi Aperti festival, the museum will host a new exhibition titled ‘L’Oriente e i suoi volti. Il ritratto fotografico dei Fratelli Zangaki’. Curated by Lucia Simona Pacchierotti in collaboration with the Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia, the display features photographic portraits that explore themes of identity and power. The exhibition is scheduled to run from October 22 to January 25, accompanied by guided tours and educational activities at the Giuliano Briganti Photo Library.
