Santa Marta detention center evacuated following riots and overcrowding

Authorities have completed the evacuation and transfer of all inmates from the Centro de Detención Transitorio Norte, known as ‘La Norte’, in Santa Marta, Colombia. The facility, located in the city’s historic and commercial center, had been plagued by severe overcrowding, having previously held over 300 detainees in a space designed for only 100 people.

The closure follows months of instability, including riots, escapes, and public order disturbances that affected local merchants and residents. A major incident occurred in March 2026, involving a riot that resulted in one inmate's death, injuries to three police officers, and the escape of 34 detainees.

The transfer was coordinated through an inter-institutional effort involving the Ministry of Justice and local administration following requests from Mayor Carlos Pinedo. While the new location for the transferred inmates has not been publicly specified, the evacuation is expected to improve security and economic activity in the historic district.
