Santa Marta reports drop in homicides amid rise in cybercrime

In Santa Marta, security data for the first half of 2026 shows a mixed landscape. According to analysis by Santa Marta Cómo Vamos, homicides decreased by 34.4% compared to the same period in 2025, dropping from 93 to 61 cases. Theft also saw a 32% reduction.

However, other criminal activities are rising. Extortion cases reached 62, and threats totaled 400 during the period. Notably, cybercrime increased significantly, rising from 434 cases in the first half of 2025 to 646 in 2026. Recent incidents, including the disappearance of two youths in Gaira and the discovery of a man's body in Mamatoco, have renewed public concern regarding the institutional capacity to prevent crime and ensure safety.
