Colombia deploys security forces in Santa Marta and Cali
Colombia is experiencing intensified security operations across several regions to combat organized crime and paramilitary groups. In Santa Marta and surrounding areas like Ciénaga and Buritaca, the government has deployed over 1,100 security personnel, including 500 soldiers and 600 police officers, following a surge in violence and threats of an armed strike. This response follows the death of a high-ranking criminal leader during a recent operation. Authorities have also transferred approximately 76 inmates suspected of criminal links to maximum-security facilities to prevent coordinated illegal activities.
In Cali, President Abelardo De La Espriella is leading ‘Operación Iron,’ a targeted effort to reclaim the city center from criminal structures. The operation involves the Colombian National Police and the Army, focusing on recovering urban spaces and conducting arrests and seizures of illegal goods, drugs, and weapons.
Other notable security actions include the capture of five ELN members in Tibú following armed clashes, and the discovery of an illegal weapons and explosives cache in Cumaribo, Vichada, linked to the Acacio Medina structure. Additionally, authorities in Valledupar seized communication devices from the La Tramacúa prison, while military operations in Buga resulted in the death of three members of the FARC dissidents' Front 57.
