Santa Monica Pier sign dismantled for restoration
The historic 85-year-old Santa Monica Pier sign has been dismantled as part of the Pier Bridge Replacement Project. The landmark, which has stood at the pier entrance since 1941, is being removed to allow for a multimillion-dollar bridge overhaul.
The sign will be transported to a facility in Las Vegas operated by YESCO, a company specializing in neon restoration. The refurbishment process will include repairing neon tubing, removing rust, repainting, and performing structural work to preserve its historic character.
Once restored, the sign is expected to return to the pier entrance between late 2027 and 2028. Upon its return, it will be installed at a slightly higher elevation to improve visibility and provide better clearance for vehicles.
