Santa Monica police fatally shoot knife-wielding man

A man was shot and killed by police on Saturday afternoon in Palisades Park, near the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. The incident occurred while officers were investigating an unrelated domestic violence report.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, an individual armed with a “large, kitchen-style” knife charged at officers while they were interviewing witnesses. An officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual. Although emergency responders provided medical care, the man later died at a hospital.

Police Lieutenant Lewis Gilmour stated the suspect was “100%” unrelated to the initial domestic violence investigation. No officers were injured during the encounter. Authorities have requested that the public avoid the area while investigators preserve evidence and conduct a preliminary investigation. Bodycam footage of the incident is expected to be released in the future.
