Santa Rita recovery clinic mass departure triggers investigation

More than 100 individuals left a recovery clinic in Santa Rita, Paraíba, following allegations of mistreatment, spoiled food, and inadequate medical care. After leaving the facility, a portion of the group spent the night at a gas station along the BR-230 highway.

Reports indicate that the facility, which operated out of a farm, allegedly failed to provide promised therapeutic services despite significant monthly fees. Some residents reported isolation and restricted communication with their families. There are also allegations that the administration moved the group to the Paraíba location to evade previous police interventions at a different site in another state.

The Public Ministry of Paraíba (MPPB) is monitoring the situation. While many individuals were sent back to their home states of Paraíba, Pernambuco, and Sergipe, or picked up by relatives, approximately 24 of the 170 residents remain at the facility under municipal responsibility. The investigation is ongoing as authorities await reports from the local Social Assistance Secretariat.
