Santa Rosa fishermen hold traditional Cristo Pescador procession

Hundreds of fishermen and their families gathered in Santa Rosa, Ecuador, for a nautical procession honoring Cristo Pescador, the patron saint of the port. The romería, a religious and cultural tradition dating back about fifty years, saw more than a thousand boats decorated with white, red and sky‑blue balloons, streamers and multicoloured ribbons set out from the harbor.

The image of Cristo Pescador was placed on the prow of a lead vessel, which guided the fleet as it sailed from Santa Rosa to the beach of Salinas in Santa Elena province. Participants prayed for protection, a safe return from sea and gratitude for their catch. Gloria Tigrero expressed her faith, saying, “My blessed Christ, you are my protector, never abandon my child.” Educator Alberto Medina, who helped launch the celebration, recalled its origin as a response to the growing fishing community. Fisherman Abel González recounted a recent rescue he attributed to the saint’s intercession.

The event underscores the deep connection between the local fishing community and its maritime heritage, reinforcing communal bonds and spiritual devotion each year.
