Santa Rosa Jáuregui municipalization proposal under debate in Querétaro
A proposal to grant Santa Rosa Jáuregui municipal status is currently under review by the Constitutional Points Commission of the Querétaro State Congress. Santiago Nieto Castillo, coordinator of the Fourth Transformation in Querétaro, has expressed support for the move, describing it as a “legitimate aspiration” that addresses a historical demand and could correct decisions dating back to 1931.
However, representatives from several municipalities, including Querétaro, San Juan del Río, Corregidora, and Huimilpan, have raised concerns regarding the financial viability and the guaranteed provision of public services. Legislators noted that creating a new municipality would require revising the State Fiscal Coordination Law to restructure resource distribution and avoid negatively impacting more marginalized areas.
To address these concerns, Commission President Homero Barrera Mcdonald stated that the legislative body will request technical studies from institutions such as INEGI, the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ), and the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI). The final ruling must undergo several legislative stages, including a vote in local town councils and, if a constitutional reform is required, a minimum of 17 votes in the local Congress.
