Santakos Bridge reaches major milestone in Kaunas

A major construction milestone has been reached on the Santakos Bridge in Kaunas, Lithuania. A steel girder weighing 6,500 tons has been successfully installed, connecting both banks of the Nemunas River.

The 417-meter-long bridge will feature four traffic lanes along with dedicated paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The installation process, which involved approximately 100 workers and a team of ten engineers, took two years to complete. The bridge will link a tunnel and viaduct on the Užnemunė Street side to a roundabout on the Brasta Street side.

Contractors aim to complete the remaining work, including concrete retaining walls, safety installations, and architectural elements, to open the bridge to traffic by the end of 2026. Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis noted that this project is part of a broader series of infrastructure investments in the city, following the recent opening of a viaduct over the A1 highway and the Southeast Bypass.
