Santander expands U.S. presence through Webster acquisition
Santander is executing a strategic growth plan focused on high-scale and high-profitability markets, most notably through its acquisition of Webster in the United States. The $12.2 billion deal, completed in August, has significantly expanded the bank's footprint in the U.S. northeast, bringing its American operations to nearly eight million customers and approximately $327 billion in assets.
This expansion is part of a broader reallocation of capital. Following the Webster acquisition, Santander also divested portions of its Polish operations, selling a 49% stake in Santander Bank Polska and 50% of its asset management business to Erste for approximately €7 billion. This move allowed the group to realize roughly €1.9 billion in capital gains while shifting focus toward markets that offer greater connectivity and scale for its global platforms and technology.
