Santander orders evacuation of building on Santa Clara Street

The Santander City Council has ordered the preventive evacuation of three families and several commercial premises from a building located at number 8 Santa Clara Street. The building was undergoing legal renovations to be converted into 27 apartments under a project validated by the local government.

Mayor Gema Igual stated that the evacuation was triggered after the project's technical director identified that the building's structure was more weakened than expected during the works. While not classified as an emergency, the Mayor noted that structural reinforcement is required and cannot be safely performed while the building is occupied. The occupants were given 48 hours to vacate, and the construction company has been granted 15 days to carry out the necessary reinforcement works.
