Santander, Spain begins door‑to‑door waste collection rollout
A door‑to‑door waste collection service will be introduced in Santander, starting on 29 June. The first week (29 June – 5 July) will collect only organic waste, with other streams (recyclables, non‑recyclables, hygienic waste) continuing to be placed in curbside containers. From 6 July onward, all waste types will be collected at the door according to a weekly calendar that specifies the colour‑coded bins for each day.
The municipal government also opened a new public office on Calle Guevara. The service is now operated by the UTE Acciona‑Oxital, which began a one‑week adaptation period. The 10‑year contract, signed in April, is valued at €253.8 million and obliges the operator to achieve 100 % implementation by June 2027. It includes the replacement of more than 3 600 containers, a fleet upgrade where 97 % of vehicles are low‑emission and 62 % electric, and new training for the 300‑strong workforce.
