Sant'Andrea Hospital performs rare tumor removal and facial reconstruction

A multidisciplinary medical team at the Sant'Andrea Hospital-University Center in Rome has successfully performed a rare, single-session procedure to remove a large tumor and reconstruct a patient's face.

The patient, a resident of the Rome province, presented with symptoms including persistent headaches, memory disturbances, and walking difficulties. Diagnostic imaging revealed an extensive tumor in the anterior cranial fossa that had infiltrated the frontal bone and orbit.

Led by neurosurgeon Mario Giarletta and Dr. Francesca Barbieri, the team performed the tumor resection and immediate craniofacial reconstruction using customized titanium prostheses in one operation. This approach was chosen to minimize patient trauma and reduce the risks associated with multiple surgeries. The use of advanced titanium technology allowed for the restoration of facial bone structures and functionality, aiming to prevent severe aesthetic deficits and facilitate a faster recovery.
