Alentejo municipalities push for large business park on new rail line

Seven municipalities in Portugal’s Alentejo region – Alandroal, Borba, Estremoz, Redondo, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Sousel and Vila Viçosa – have presented a joint proposal to host the planned Grande Área de Acolhimento Empresarial. The site would be located at Technical Station 2 (Alandroal‑Vila Viçosa) on the new International South Corridor railway line. Studies carried out with Infraestruturas de Portugal show the project is technically, economically and financially viable, offering direct rail access and proximity to the A6 motorway for intermodal logistics. Municipal leaders argue the park could become a structuring investment for the local marble industry, help cut regional carbon emissions and support broader territorial cohesion by attracting further intermunicipal cooperation.
