Santarém launches free sterilization campaign for pets

The Santarém City Council has launched a new campaign offering free sterilization for up to 250 dogs and cats belonging to local residents. The initiative aims to promote animal welfare, combat abandonment, and assist families in controlling pet populations.

In a move to increase accessibility, particularly for residents with limited digital literacy or economic difficulties, registration has been decentralized. Interested parties must apply in person at their local parish council (Junta de Freguesia) between August 17 and September 15.

To qualify, pet owners must reside in the Santarém municipality, and each person is limited to registering only one animal. Animals must have a registered microchip. For dogs, a valid rabies vaccination is required. If an animal lacks a microchip or rabies vaccine, these procedures may be performed on the day of sterilization under the framework of the DGAV official initiative. Once applications are validated by the municipality, the Official Animal Collection Center of Santarém (CROAS) will contact successful applicants to schedule the surgery.
